The Fly
Asleep At The Wheel EP
"Subtle and graceful, it's the best bits of the Doves and Electric
Soft Parade. With heart-felt melodies, intense lyrics and beautifully
crafted instrumentation, Dan Glendining makes a play for a place in
the building UK singer-songwriter renaissance. Deservedly and unreservedly
achieved in one release."

The Hit Sheet
"As the first signing to Saul Galpern’s new label, Black
Car has something of a blank canvas. Asleep At The Wheel starts
with the lightest of brush strokes and builds gradually to an enormous
quivering car wreck. Guitars slap, slice and scream over the track while
vocalist Dan Glendining’s confident voice builds to full throttle.
The Hit Sheet has been sitting on some demos of an early incarnation
of the group for about a year. We lost touch with Dan’s whereabouts
but have never failed to be awed by his achingly melancholic songwriting
and precise musicianship…"

"We were honoured to open up proceedings at the new venue with
a brand new band....Dan Glendining, vocalist, guitarist and songwriter,
with his brother Tom on drums, have taken on two newbies to perform
what is amazingly their first gig. Black Car is essentially the heart
of Dan laid bare. The beauty of the music is not only in the structure
of the melodies, but the fragility of the lyrics, like on opening
tune 'Asleep At The Wheel', where he longs for the phone
to call, a reference possibly to his brother who he lost not so long
ago through illness. He cuts a haunted figure on stage, but totally
captivating nonetheless, with a voice of staggering loveliness. As
the gig proceeds, and the initial nerves subside he gets absorbed
in what he's doing so much that he looks practically lost in the music,
while the rest of us are only really looking at one person in the
room. 'Come On Home', too, is a gorgeous track, with a hint
of the OK Computers about it, but still a wonderful song in it's own
right. Towards the end of their set it gets a little ragged, and to
fresh ears may border on self-indulgence, but these are songs that
don't necessarily give up everything on a first date. The band as
a unit are in their infancy and will only get better with time.
